Road Trip Essentials

Highway between Hope and Cache Creek BC

A couple weeks ago I took my first road trip as a mumma of 2 ~ 8 days. 1289km's driving. 2 ferry trips. 3 cities. One 5 week old. One 3 1/2 year old. One mumma. It was FABULOUS! As a good friend said recently, when did we become so afraid of our children? I have had many, many people telling me I was crazy to do the trip myself, especially with such a young babe. I am not going to lie, it was busy and at times quite challenging... I must admit, I am kinda proud of myself. And when asked if I would do it again...in a heartbeat! I got to have some of the greatest conversations with my little girl. She is so curious, and watching the world go by on our drive led to some of the coolest questions and insights.

The key to success, like many things in life, was patience. I knew I couldn't be in a rush to get anywhere, and had to throw any preconcieved ideas of what the trip would look like to the wind. Gone are the days of hitting the road and looking to make time...unless, per chance, your munchkins actually fall asleep for half an hour at the same time!

In addition to patience, there were a couple tangable items packed that made the trip a little easier. With the holidays coming, I would imagine there are many more road trips being planned out there, so I thought I would share some of my road trip essentials here! Tried, tested and true:)

1. Music ~ A dear friend hooked me up with Family Tree by Frances England. Family friendly without being annoying kid music. A calm kinda folky sound that I LOVE and helped keep a calm vibe through the car that I also LOVE.

2. Warm...no, HOT drinks ~ I love tea. I love it even more when I actually get to enjoy it hot! Those with young children, or remember when their children were young, will be able to commisserate to the fact that this is a rarity...or was until now! My dad found this amazing thermal mug and I had to get one for myself. It keeps my tea hot for literally hours. Trust me, it often takes me a couple hours to get the first cuppa down! I bought two thermal mugs and because it keeps tea hot for so long, filled both when setting out and could enjoy the second cup of chai a couple hours into the trip without needing to coordinate yet another pit stop.

3. Hand Lotion ~ Hours in the car with hands on the steering wheel. Washing your hands constantly changing diapers. Car air conditioning. Changing weather conditions. So grateful to have found a lotion I love, that is also great for sensitive skin! Plus, I love the gentle scent.

4. Poop Bags ~ We found these biodegradable bags for our four legged friend, but they have found a second use in our diaper bag. They are compact and perfect to contain anything that needs to be contained until reaching your destination...dirty diapers, dirty clothes, wash cloths...

5. Cold Refreshments ~ When the tea was done. The water was gone. A delicious little afternoon refreshment...
